First News

As a school, we subscribe to children’s newspapers ‘first news’. It provides well written up to date articles about current world events and it is very well liked by pupils in the school. Parents are currently able to sign up for free at https://subscribe.firstnews.co.uk/free-downloadable-issue/

TTS

TTS had put together downloadable “learning at home” packs for key stage 1 (age 5-7) and key stage (ages 7-11) and an early years edition is coming soon. Top Marks

There are a range of games available on this website. The games are aimed at the correct age groups and cover a range of topics. The children love to play these games in class and have been accessing the number and pattern games this term.

Mathematics

Children need to continue learning to count to 100 forwards and backwards, from different starting points. Please practice reading and writing numbers to at least 2, forming them correctly. If they are able to progress beyond this stage, please encourage to do so!

Please learn number facts within 10 (and within 20, if able) including number bonds (4 + 6= 10, 13 + 7= 20), halving and doubling (2+2, 4+4), Find halves in practical situations- cook a pizza or bake a cake and cut into halve. Pretend to buy a pizza before you eat it, it is a fun way to learn about money. When cooking or baking talk about measures.

There are lots of lovely number songs on YouTube which the children love to sing along with eg counting to 100, 3D shapes song, positional language eg where is the monkey.

Literacy

Reading

Keeping up with reading is vitally important for children who are away from school for a period of time. If children aren’t in school, they are expected to read daily for at least 15 minutes but please read for longer if possible. In addition, pupils are encouraged to read a variety of text (lists, recipes, cards etc)

There are lots of useful clips on youtube that support children with the reading of tricky words, cvc/ccvc/cvcc words and simple sentences. Here are a few examples:

Stories- Share your favourite stories, ask questions about what is happening in the story, what do the children think will happen next? Why? Who is your favourite character?

Oracy

Watch a film together, who was the main character? Do you have a favourite part- why?

Build a den- talk about the steps needed. Tell stories over torch light when you are inside.

If you have an ipad use apps like my story and book creator to record your voice over your creations. Remember to use good words and speak in a clear voice.

Writing

Practice CVC, CCVC, and CVCC spellings correctly (examples of these are listed below)

Practice reading and spelling tricky words (listed below). Children can put these words into sentences and write them out.

Practice sound formation in upper and lower case form

Write a range of writing formats- reports, lists, invitations, cards etc.

Write instructions for building a den, baking or cooking activities, making a bed etc. Remind the children to use ordering words.

Write a story with a beginning, middle and an end- remember to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

 

Our theme for next term is ‘sun, sea and sandy toes’. Some ideas for you to complete at home…

  • What animals and sea creatures do you find at the seaside and the oceon? Research and create a fact file.
  • Create a bubble map of all the things you can do at the seaside
  • Write a recount of a time you went to the beach
  • Begin to describe items found on the beach with the use of an adjective e.g. the sandy beach.
